Irrigation of the external auditory canal is one of the most common options in treating cerumen (earwax) impaction. It can be attempted alone or with the pre-treatment of a cerumenolytic agent, such as acetic acid, mineral oil, or hydrogen peroxide.
Earigator was designed by an Otologist, combining the functions of an otoscope and irrigation into one and providing the most advanced means of cerumen control with the least amount of discomfort, if any at all. Patients enjoy the feeling of the warm water massaging their ear and rarely complain about lingering pain, as is common in traditional methods. Its self-contained temperature control keeps the water at body temperature, eliminating any caloric or vertigo side effects, while pressure regulation allows for the removal of impacted earwax without endangering the eardrum.
Furthermore, the Earigator system’s effectiveness at clearing earwax reduces the number of required sessions, contributing to a more efficient and stress-free experience for our patients.
The Earigator helps encourage those who wear hearing aids, use earplugs, or frequently struggle with impacted earwax to schedule regular earwax removal appointments and avoid the aching, stuffiness, muted sound, and ringing in the ears associated with earwax buildup before they start.
There are a few contraindications to performing irrigation of the ear. These contraindications are a patient’s inability to sit upright or still, a patent tympanostomy tube, a foreign body present in the ear canal, a perforated tympanic membrane, and severe swimmer’s ear (otitis externa). Also, a history of middle ear disease, ear surgery, inner ear problems (especially vertigo), is an additional reason to choose another method for cerumen dis-impaction.
We at Hearing Help Canada, are expert in techniques used to comfortably remove the buildup of excessive cerumen in order to provide greater safety, more effective removal, pain-free method, and the highest level of comfort for our patients. For more information see Ear Wax Removal service.
